Is MTD for Corporation Tax Scrapped?
Quick Answer
HMRC has paused the rollout of Making Tax Digital for Corporation Tax, focusing all current efforts on the MTD for Income Tax rollout in 2026.
A few years ago, HMRC announced ambitious plans to roll out Making Tax Digital (MTD) across all major tax types, including Corporation Tax.
However, if you are searching for updates on MTD for Corporation Tax, you will find very little recent news.
The current status of MTD for Corporation Tax
While "scrapped" might be a strong word, HMRC has officially paused the development of MTD for Corporation Tax.
They are currently focusing all of their resources and attention on delivering MTD for Income Tax, which launches in April 2026. Because of this, there is no timetable or expected launch date for Corporation Tax to join the MTD program.
Do not confuse MTD for Corporation Tax with MTD for VAT. If your company is VAT registered, you must still follow the MTD for VAT rules.
What this means for limited companies
If you run a limited company, you can relax. You do not need to prepare for quarterly reporting or new digital record-keeping rules for your company's profits anytime soon.
You can continue to submit your annual accounts and tax returns using your current processes. If you prefer to keep your company records on a simple spreadsheet, you can absolutely do so.
We will continue to monitor HMRC's announcements and update our guides if the situation changes.
