FOI and sign-up data
- 864,000 taxpayers mandated from April 2026 (HMRC, "Making Tax Digital for Income Tax business population statistics: commentary", 13 August 2025); 216,000 of those are unrepresented (LITRG citing the same HMRC publication).
- As of mid-March 2026: 81,000 signed up (~10%); 2,200 exemption requests received (ACCA citing HMRC).
- Estimated ~22,000 Tranche 1 taxpayers affected by business cessation issues (FOI 2025/160577, Alan Jones / AccountingWEB).
- HMRC has been issuing mandation/nudge letters in three batches: November 2025, February 2026, March 2026.
